there are a couple of techniques using I and M. Firstly we have the ‘free stroke’ this is where your fingers strike the strings freely and next we have the ‘rest stroke’ this is where your fingers strike the strings and rest on string above it (this stroke produces a louder sound and is typically used in runs of notes)
Both techniques have a similar hand position. Rest your thumb on the 6th string (stability) and have your knuckle’s almost parallel to the strings. The argument for this position is that it is supposed to help you with speed and stability. When plucking the 6th string put your thumb above the sound hole and pluck towards your thumb.
some people argue that you stay in the natural position (flat wrist) as this produces the best quality sound and can still generate the same speed.
I tend to play the first method mentioned with the only difference of not putting my thumb on the 6th string for stability (Paco De Lucia uses the same technique) as I don’t like obstructions and still manage to generate reasonable speed
My recommendation is to try both methods and see which one works best for you.
Let me know if you have any further questions and I’ll demonstrate at our next class
