The only issues I can think of using your thumb rather than a pick is that you may not get the consistent loudness a pick gives nor the necessary speed from alternate picking. Having said that I’m sure you could train your thumb to make up for any shortfalls. In brief I’d say try to learn using a pick. If you’re already hard wired with your thumb then stick with that and ensure you can get the same loudness and speed a pick gives you.
